“Beauty will save the world”
-Dostoyevsky
The fundamental nature of Art is to transcend a craft in the search of personal truth, and in so doing, create beauty in its multifarious forms. Art’s foundation is craft and technique. In my mind there is no debate over this. It is the underpinning of all great ideas and inventions. To set aside thousands of years of hard learned and cultured techniques that have brought us both extraordinary art, astounding inventions and visions of future possibilities, is both irresponsible and self-indulgent. Heightened technical skill mixed with artistic vision is a goal we should all share, no matter the field in which we find ourselves. As artists we should endeavor to study and to balance our perception and experience of nature and science. We may lean towards nature in our final conception, or we may lean towards science. Either way our goals seek a higher truth attainable only through the study, perfection, and ultimately transcendence of our trade or craft. We are explorers of both the world around us and of our own minds, bringing back the spoils of our explorations and fusing them into our lives and work. This is my objective and aspiration as an artist. I wish to sharpen my skills and strengthen my artistic foundation to a point where I can launch deeper into my own inner and outer worlds with the ease of an unhindered mind, in order to create something unique, truthful, beautiful, and inspiring to others. I wish to create art, beautiful in nature, and perhaps capable of enhancing the world around me.
